Ford Mondeo rough road noise...second time of asking..anyone any idea's?

2001 Diesel Mondeo, 2Lt Diesel. When I leave smooth road and go onto rough road, a kinda of knocking comes into the car, sounds as if its suspension related, the mechanic who prepared it for its NCT (car test in Ireland every 2 years) couldnt find where it was comming from. It passed the NCT no bother, even with the knocking in it, the mechanic thinks, and only thinks it may be the top part of the shock, but as it passed the NCT he was reluctant to spend his time and my money investigating it further, the car isnt wearing tyres improperly or anything. Just when you go onto a rough surface a "on-off" dum dum dum sound (knocking noise can be heard) drove me mad for the first few weeks I had the car, ime used to it now, Ime getting new tyres and tracking shortly so I said Ide check it out myself...any ideas and if so how to fix etc....Joe

Just found your Question lol sorry for the late reply
This noise has been driving me up the wall for 4 months. I had it on the ramps loads of times, I couldn't find it until 1 week ago. It turns out that our beloved Mondeos have a drop link problem. Mine did it had snapped in the middle but both half's were still attached to the car.. soon as the bottom half fell of it made the car unstable when turning right. It kind of dragged itself around corners also had a lot of knocking and road noise and dull fudds ect well anyway you have 2 droplinks on the back suspension and 2 on the front (1 per side) it ties the suspension to the anti roll bar Had the drop link on the front passenger front wheel done and the car is stable all noises had stopped just 1 week later the noise is back.. took it to ford again the brand new fitted drop link has snapped again its brand new !! so under warranty gets done next week in a fast fit garage it works out about £40 fully fitted per side good luck with your mondy when they are fixed they are lovely to drive. You can do it yourself but for all the messing about a garage is the easy option

how do you fit the front links on a mk 2 mondeo

darren, May 2010
changed the drop link rods there is one on each shock absorber 4 in all. the knocking was comming from the front.so only changed them!problem solved.to describe the knocking,it was more like a rattle than a knock and also did it on smooth roads aswell. easy to replace half an hour each side. cost £14.00 each dont go to ford as £50.00 plus each, any car spare shop can order them the same day very common problem. hope this helps.

I had this on my 01 Mondeo estate, it is annoying. Ford garage found it in the end. Apparently, it was the handbrake cable at the nearside left. It was loose and geting bounced around on rough roads.

try your anti-roll bar drop link's if these are starting to wear they do create an annoying knocking (front anti-roll bar drop link's,one on each side) best of luck steray
