how to disconnect a gas cooker?

is it safe for me to disconnect my gas cooker by unclipping the bayonet fitting
stephen clowes, June 2005
Legally, all gas should be dealt with by a CORGI registered engineer. However, and I am open to critism, disconnecting a bayonnett fitting should not be a problem. Please note, I am neither legally nor CORGI trained.
