how can i reprogram my vauxhall astra key fob?

MK 4 vauxhall astra. my existing key fob has gone faulty and i have got a used key fob in good working order. how can i reprogram the key fob to work on my car.
paul, March 2008
Hope someone can help.
I have a 2002 astra. I broke the key and had a new key cut- (the fob shouldn't be a problem as I just replaced the actual metal key!!!) Turns out, if I use this key to start the car- yes, it unlocks/ locks and starts the car.... the engine cuts out after about 10 seconds.... would I need to reprogram/ resync?? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi Shirley, just had the same problem with mine... car had to be recovered to Vauxhall dealer for repair.. They put a new chip in to replace the one I lost, and programmed it to the car. Cost £89.98 in total

Sorry, need a small correction:
Thanks guys, both of my remotes were not working for my Astra G (03). I changed the batteries and still not working. Tried the idea: key in the ignition turned to II, the dash lights came on, pressed the UNLOCK on the remote, the car doors locked and unlocked. Now both remotes are working perfectly. Very quick and very happy. Thanks again.

Hi folks
I tried this (key in ignition (and also in pos 2) and press lock and unlock) today but it don't work!!!!

ewhd, March 2012
The key in positon II of ignition switch is the way it works for me usually, But not today.
Detached the key fob halves as there was a rattle when I shook key.
Turns out the battery holder had become detached (broken soldered legs)
I placed the battery holder back in correct position and inside the other half cover placed a few folds of toilet paper to force battery holder against contacts.
Went out to car and tried it (Resetting as mentioned already) and Hey Presto it works

my vauxhall astra 1.6 sxi ran out of fuel now put fuel in and engine management light on and wont start any one got suggestions

glyn tate, January 2011
Heavy handed mechanics often force the old batteries out of the key fob, breaking the soldered contact points on the key fob circuit board. If the ignition reset procedure does not work, you may need to source a replacement key fob. WARNING: DON'T FORGET TO KEEP THE TRANSPODER CHIP IF YOU CHANGE THE KEY FOB, OR ELSE THE ENGINE WON'T START (see immobiliser).

Although the answer sees to be: key in the ignition and turn it to number 2 ignition, then press the remote. all the doors will automatically lock and then unlock, it should then be reset.
I replaced the key battery CR2032 and now I can get the car to un-lock, it will not relock from the button on the keys even though the light flashes when it is pressed no matter what I try.. any suggestions ?? ( i have tried the above) and the lights on thing..

I got a damaged key fob circuit board; it had no socket for the battery but managed to solder thin cables to it and to the battery. The little red led light on the key would lit when pressing the buttons but the car would not respond to lock or unlock commands. Then I read the comments here and put the key in the ignition turned key till ignition was on them pressed the lock button on the key for a couple of seconds, took the key out and now it works just fine again. I'm very happy because of the money I have saved by not having to buy and program another key fob.

Jose, November 2008
My key fob didnt work i changed the battery several times and nothing so i was back to unlocking the doors with the key. however i put the key in the ignition so the dash was lit up and pressed the lock button on the key fob which seem to reprogramme it and now its working fine.

debbie, October 2008
look on ebay "reprogram"

naz, July 2008
try this -open up old key fob and remove small transponder -it just lifts out. now put it in your new fob . build keyfob up with original blade. put key in ignition turn on now press open on keyfob. central locking will lock the doors and reopen -job done
