how can i have power steering?

it is a nightmare to park in my street because my car has no power steering it would be great if i could have it fitted but does anyone know how much it would cost and how long it would take? it is a 1998 ford ka

This would be extremely expensive.

You would need a new steering rack ( can be got for £150 reconditioned which includes a surcharge as you wouldn't be able to send your old rack back as it would be a different type ). You would also need a new steering column as they are different ( about £100 ), you would need a power steering pump ( around £60 ), new suspension components ( as they are shaped differently ) and a different auxillary drive belt. Plus you would need the pipework and a few other bits. You may even need a new ECU as the powersteering has a pressure switch which it reports to the ECU to change the engine revs.

It would be cheaper to sell the car and buy one with power steering. The alternative would be to get all these parts from a scrap yard but then you couldn't guarantee the quality and you would still have to fit it all.
