Had the same problem and fixed it by replacing clutch cable as it was old,and had to use a piece of wood and a hammer to release the arm(hitting down on it)Worked the actuating arm back and forth ,cleaning around pivot and using lots of wd40 as above.Worked well.......but now 1 year later problem is back.So I am going to do the same again.
Recurring problem I think.

have you checked clutch actuating arm is returning, its beneath air filter box mine did the same i could put into any gear without touching clutch pedal also had half pedal free play before any feeling of a clutch with no noise or drive i found it was starting to seize up in the depressed state .on inspection i pushed clutch operating lever down and had perfect clutch so worked wd40 around spindle followed by light oil no problems now ...had same problem with MGF clutch simular gearbox
