How do I repair antique dining room chair backs?

I have two antique dining room chairs. By leaning backwards on the cross piece at shoulder hieght the two uprights have split down to a depth of about 6". I could glue the pieces back into place - but the result would have no real strength and the joints will easily split again when leaned on. Any suggestions please as I also want to retain the appearance of the chairs

Go for the adhesive route I think - if you can open the split a little then rub a quality PVA glue in, you can wipe of the excess with a damp cloth. It should also dry clear.
