What is the Air valve for on the engine of my 1996 mondeo?

There is an air valve (exactly the same as on a tyre) behind the main cyclinder body on my 1.8 16V 1996 Mondeo - What is it for?

sounds like the fuel de-pressurisation valve if it has a blue cap on it, or if you have airconditioning it will be the charge point
