How can I fix the charging system on my Murry ride-on. It has a12hp Briggs & Stratton vertical shaft engine. I get a reading of 9volts at the two wires comming from the engine - is this correct or should it be 12volts? How do I get at the charging unit to change it? Where can I buy a new charging unit?
Any help greatly appreciated.
How do i go about checking the charging system on a briggs engine,The battery will not stay charged,I know it could be the battery but it was replaced a few months back. Not to say it is not just bad....please help!

691185 3 wire is too expensive. any one have the schmatic for the internal parts at 5 buck and not 70 bucks?
find the conector and wire color and check the voltage with the regulator disconnected.

Briggs engines use a flywheel generator that produces AC - this is rectified to DC using either a single diode or the modern types use a proper rectifier and voltage regulator pack - identified by noticing cooling fins on it. Electric starters use 12v DC. Quote the 3 banks of number code digits to a B&S agent and they'll tell you what you need.
