What's wrong with my Zanussi ZWX1605W?

After I washed my kitchen mat it attempts to spin but quits and continues otherwise swinging etc. Also it is sounding as if a belt is sleeping or something like that. When I found the mat still full of water I attempted to rebalance and spin, and again tried to spin completelly empty to no avail. We (my husband and I) are reasonably able mechanically and cannot afford to call a professional. Please any help out there?

take off back cover and check if the belt has come off or if its worn and slipping. if belt is ok check the carbon brushes in the motor. Theyre graphite blocks which transfer mains power to the copper segments of the motor - located at the other end of the motor from the drive pulley.
