Why does my electric grill smoke?

I have just bee given a Godin Sovereign dual fuel range cooker and when the electric grill is turned on it smokes quite badly for a while and then settles down. Is this something I should be worried about?

Indeed no of the manufacturing materials are flamable in any way , it is only cooking oils/fats or food that can burn and result in smoking !!

its burning of the fat/grease. maybe the grill in oven has not been used much
