why doesn't my 1998 cherokee jeep start?

The (diesel) engine is obviously turning over and there is grey smoke coming out of the exhaust, but the car won't start. What do I need to look at and do/replace?

If you are certain that the fuel is not contaminated i.e. with petrol, then it sounds like the 'glow-plugs' may not be working. A short burst of 'Easy Start' into the engine air intake during cranking will prove this. i.e if the engine now runs then you need to have the 'Glow plugs' checked.
