My '97 1.8 16v Escort is miss firing...Help?

After noticing my car was stuttering i thought i'd check the spark plugs. They were shot so after replacing them with the correct make and model, i've noticed that the car is still doing this. Can you help me please?
Could it be a filter, Oil change required, Distributor Cap?

If the plugs were that bad it would be a good idea to change plug wires and dist cap ..when ever there is a bad plug the fire has no where to go but back into the dist cap and burns it up
