04 Mondeo TDCI gear selection?

Hi I own a mondeo mk 3 tdci, and am having problems selecting 1st,2nd and reverse when stationary, or when just getting in the car.
The problem seems intermittent, I also have creaking noises coming from the passenger front when cornering with weight transfer.
Could the two be connected? maybe an engine mounting or simply a gear selector problem?
Any help would be great as I am going to take it to the dealer I got it from on Monday, but I like to be prepared for confrontation with unhelpful mechanics?

Hi thanks for the answer, I have found that on the occasions that I cannot find, 1st or reverse, if I wiggle it into fifth or third, and then into 1st it goes in quite easily, anyway thanks, I am going to get it looked at by Mr Arnold Clark Accrington, where I purchased the car last week, like I said I just need some ammo for the service manager, cause I want to get it nipped in the bud asap.
Cheers

Hi the gear selector problem sounds like something t do with the clutch system either save cylinder, master cylinder,or pressure plate and clutch plate itself.
These also suffer from the dual mass flywheel wearing out very quickly,at low mileage.
The creaking sounds like a rubber susspension part,ie strut top mounting or bush on the subframe or something else, difficult to say without seeing the car.
