My Megane II 52 reg 1.5 dci does not start, I have the error message message on the dash "steering locked", with the service light on. I can reset this message by holding the start button for 5 sec, but this message re-appears shortly if I tried to restart the car, (it sometime change to "steering unlocked") - but whatever I do, it won't start (the engine does not crank at all).

Please can you help me to understand this fault? Is it expensive to fix?

2010 grand Megan/scenic.....car starts perfectly but have a warning message on the dash saying steering lock failure and when car is turned off the steeering lock won't activate....any ideas? Body control module was just replaced as it was completely fried but won't let me configure the steering lock....do I have to get a new steering lock for the new body control module

Just had the same issue with my 52 plate Megane. Fault was a broken Steering Lock unit that does not recognise the key-fob and therefore will not disable itself and allow the car to start. As with everything it had a computer attached (grrrr). Parts were about £350+vat plus labour. Will buy simple German car next time.

there is a fuse net to the battery for sterringlock take that out and put foot on cluth and brake the put fuse back and car will start :-) thanks to my lovely man, he knows his stuff!!!!

Hi heidy, the simple answer is I did not fix it, although I did find that next to the battery is a "Brain" that has some wires going in, I found that when it was not starting if I mashed this area with the palm of my hand the blighter would start to behave for a few days (bad connection I suspect) I would not reccomend that you do this however as it may invalidate and warranty you have ! (best get a mechanic to do it).
My megaine went back and I got a new Ford Focus instaed and I'm much happier with it than I ever was with the renault (I'll be sticking with Ford from now)

Megane 08 plate 1.4 16v says "turn wheel + press start" then gives up and says "steering not locked", I have to wait about an hour and it will just start as if nothing happened, the steering rack and lock were changed just over a month ago and now its getting worse. It's currently on the drive waiting for thr RAC.

i know this is a bit too late - -but you could have tried pressing the start button 5 times in quick succession.. this sometimes release the steering lock...

You really need to speak to Renault about this one, as the steering column has its own ECU....mine had a similar fault but that needed a complete new column due to PAS failure (under warranty)! Good luck with it.
