my rear windscreen wiper is working on and off, sometimes it wants to work and other times it stops....what might the problem be?

sounds like it could be a faulty earth [i think that they earth through hinges ]you could try running a seperate earth from tailgate to an earth point in boot where lights earth, also make sure contact plate and associated contact pins are clean and making good connection when tailgate closed,hope this helps.
