my indesit d 63 the control knob does nothing?

but i can move it manually i think it sticks in certain places but i also think i could smell something burning

Does it make a clicking sound when you turn it?
If it does not, then the control knob is probably broken (it has a spring behind it to keep it on and allow it to operate).
I've been trying to source a new one for my D63 but have so far been unsuccessful.
