how does water get in and how to get it out of my gas tank?

my 97'wellcraft 240 coastalrunner w/ 225hp johnson outboard would fire but wouldnt stay on tried over and over it start but wouldnt stay on got it home and went to get gas out of the boat for my lawn mower and found my mower not starting i checked the spark plug and found water it there then i relized what the problem was the gas had water . i have put HEET gas restorer in the tank but not sure i still havent started it up scence i put it in and not sure were i should go from here. any help would be appressiated

petrol loses its potential over time and it becomes diluted by condensation forming on the sides of the tanks. your tank will have an atmospheric vent on it and over time continuous cycles of humidity temperature and pressure will cause water to condensate on the relatively cold tank walls run dwn and dilute the petrol making it less likely to ignite.
To remove the problem drain the fuel out of the tank and discard, in future decide whether to leave the tank empty or always keep it full to the top so that there are no exposed tank wall for the air to condense on to.
