How do I fix my golf gti mk3 as it doesn't tick over when warm and misfires?

I start my golf gti 1997 mk3 and its fine, but once its been going and the auto choke stops it will not tick over, so when you cruise in neutral or stop it stalls. You can manually keep it ticking over with your foot on the throttle but when you take it of it stalls. It also misfires from 3 to 4 cylinders in the lower revs to about 3k. How do I fix it??

I had this problem too, sorted it by cleaning the flap that the throttle cotrols to allow air intake

Hi , I have exactly the same problem, 1997 P reg , 2 litre 8 valve........

The first thing that I - or any VW mechanic - would do is to replace the coolant temperature sensor....they often give problems and Volkswagens aren't any different.
