How can I fix my fuel prob on my 98 V.Frontera RS Sprt DTi SWB?

Hi I am looking for any help or advice if possible for my confusing and possibly v, pricey problem I am having with my 98 Frontera 2.2 Sprt DTi. I have owned it for over a year now & knew the previous owner well & therefore knew the problems they had with the car and seen the repairs completed etc.

I now own this wonderful jeep (no sarcasm - i do love it!) but have a serious problem I think?

I had been driving, stopped at side of road, turned engine off for about half an hour then restarted it just for the heaters as it was getting cold. Within seconds it had stopped (almost as if it had ran out of fuel as it just cut out). I immediately thought I'd ran out of diesel and without checking (DUH!!) put in a jerry can & then tried to start the car - nothing - it just kept turning over & over - nothing!!!

Next day got it towed to local tyre garage (previously MOT test centre) as I know the men there & needed help ASAP to get it to start or at least find out wot was wrong.

Firstly they checked I had fuel then I think they were pushing the 'bleeder' or a valve of some kind under the bonnet with a pen or something whilst doing this, I was asked to turn engine over & repeatedly pump gas pedal. After about 10-15 secs he signalled me to stop & said 'no nothing coming out there!'
So I assume he was looking for diesel to come spurting out?

We then took it for a bl**dy good tow, tried & tried to bump it but nothing.

I have now replaced the filter which was quite dirty & had some water in it the 'bowl'.

Do you have any ideas as to what else I can try first before taking this beast to a garage? Currently we are going to put fuel straight to engine to see if it'll start but after that apart frm new pump &/or taking diesel tank off I'm all out of ideas-as I am a riding instructor with crap wages,a vauxhall dealership is a no-no!

So any ideas/thoughts wud be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi Steray,

I have tried several things since I last posted my query. Including getting a mechanic out - he said looking at the pump & opening up the injectors the diesel was just trickling out, he said that it should be coming out at high pressure but there didn't seem to be a lot of pressure?! BUT ANOTHER mechanic has asked us to look at the fuel cut-off switch?!! However my partner is interested in what you have suggested & would like to have a look at the solenoid but doesn't know where it is? Can you tell us where about it is & do you know of any useful diagrams/pictures he could use
(we are working without a manual)

GOING BY WHAT YOU HAVE SAID THERE SHOULD BE NO WATER IN THE FUEL FILTER THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM

IF YOU CAN FIND THE FUEL PUMP ON THE ENGINE THEY ARE NORMALY ON THE NEAR SIDE AND HAS 4 OR MORE METAL/PLASTIC PIPES COMING OUT OF THE TOP OF IT

TRY AND RELEASE ONE OF THE NUTS ON THE TOP OF THE PUMP AND TRY NOT TO BREAK THE PIPE THEN GET SOMEONE TO TURN THE ENGINE OVER AND SEE IF YOU HAVE DIESEL OR WATER COME OUT TRY AND CATCH SOME AND SMELL IT LET ME KNOW AT UNKNO@HOTMAIL.CO.UK
