I have had the same initial problem. It was suggested that there may be a blockage of paper or similar but I could find nothing. I contacted Epson who said if there is no foreign object inside I should contact a service agent for a service.
They also offered me an equivalent unit for £117.
I have tried the above solution with success after 2 or 3 attempts. I am most grateful to oldun for the above.

I have still to investigate replacement of the waste ink pad
