How do I adjust the timing on my Mountfield rotovator?

My rotovator was working fine yesterday until it suddenly started making popping noises and then eventually it stopped. I can still start it but it won't run for any length of time and when it does run it keeps constantly making these popping noises.

Some friend has suggested it is the timing. Does anybody know how I could adjust this?

I would think it very unlikely to be anything to do with timing on a single cylinder machine, more likely to be a carb. problem (dirt or water) or at worst a leaking head gasket.
