Hotpoint 9536 just stopped?

My wife's Hotpoint 9536 just stopped during the wash cycle. The drum was full of water. I drained off the water and got the clothes out OK, but irrespective of the setting on the timer, the machine will not work. It is switched on !!

If it fills and empties, it's probably a dead motor, giving the appearance of a machine not doing anything.
