Overhead valve engine? the valves are adjusted by using a screw and locknut....to adjust the inlet,set it with the exhaust valve just about to open - to adjust the exhaust, set it with the inlet valve just closing. If its a side valve engine, the valve stems have to be ground away to set the clearance.
