Central Locking key on my renault clio 1998 not working?

Central Locking key on my renault clio 1998 not working. I have changed the batteries on the key and still the central locking key is not working. I have called up renault and they go they will charge me £74 to have a look at it and if they can't fix it they will have to reorder the key and charge me ontop of that as well. I don't know anything about cars, so can anyone help me? thanks Shaz

Hiya I have a 2002 dci Clio Central locking don't work and neither does the button inside ? Help guys

Wolf baby, November 2013
Ok I've been trying to find a way to fix this Central Locking system for my Renault Clio.

This is what happens: When you click the button to lock the car on you car key, it doesn't respond and the car doesn't lock/unlock, I have to go around locking it manually by putting the key into the key hole on each door and locking it...
The Lock button inside the vehicle works perfectly fine but that's only the button inside the car, not my car key.

How to fix it!

DON'T go disconnecting your battery or any other methods that you may have heard of!

1) Have you car completely switched off, remove the key from the car so that it's not inserted in the key hole.

2) HOLD down the 'Lock' button (which should be on your dashboard) AND at the same time holding down the lock/unlock button on your Car key! for 5 seconds until you hear the car lock then 5 seconds later it should unlock and the red dot light next to the speedometer turns on.

3) When that happens and the red light is on, wait 5-10 seconds then click on the Lock/Unlock button on your car key and VOILA!
Your car should lock up and you will see the sidelights on your car light up when you Lock/Unlock the vehicle.

I hope that this works for you as it DEFINATELY did for me, the locking system stopped working for me ever since I bought the car which was 4-5 years ago, if not more.
So basically the car was unlocked unless I lock it manually, finally today I decided to find a way to fix it and I SURE DID FIND A WAY TO FIX IT!

Don't go to a Renault Car Service, as they will make you pay for the repair and the repair is soo easy to do, takes under a minute, save your money and follow the instructions below, it definately works as it did with me.

Clio 2002 plate. Ignition off, disconnect negative, ignition on, reconnect negative.. worked for me!! Yay! Thank you so much, saved me over £300 which was quoted at the garage.

Gill, December 2012
put second hand offside rear door on scenic.central locking locks this door while unlocking others and unlocks when locking the other doors.year 2000

I had this problem with the same year Clio, because the sunroof leaks and the sensor gets wet cleverly placed by Renault where it can get wet. Get a new sensor £55 new or from a breakers (If you can find one now) make sure its not one from a sunroof model!
They are not programmed so will work.

VW Stripteaser, January 2012
when dissconecting the negative will you need radio code

james, March 2011
I did exactly as it said on the tin ! Ignition off, remove the negative lead - ignition on and replace the negative lead and HEY PRESTO, the central locking works. THanks so much !

Gusshoneybun, March 2011
yayyy. disconecting the battery worked on my 04 plate dci100

I have a renault clio 98 and few months ago after i washed it the central locking stopped working. i have tried disconnecting the battery leads with ignition off and all that but it is not working. So i am guessing it is to do with water getting through to the sensor. Carter how do you actually take the sensor out so that i can try to dry it off ?

Ben Sinclair, November 2010
Did it, now I need to give it time to see if it works ok. I trust it will from all of these answers.
Your a star, thank you very much.

I just carried out the disconnect negative lead then reconnect whilst the ignition is turned to on and it worked a treat.

Had previously taken it to a local garage who couldn't reapir it and recommended I take it to a renault dealer to fix it!

My problem occured after changing key fob battery and ended up having to lock the car with the central locking button inside then manually locking the drivers door.

Thanks for the cure, saved me a packet I'm sure

Chris

Just tried your solution of disconnecting the negative lead with the ignition off then turning the ignition on and reconnecting the lead.........RESULT!! Thanks a bunch!

Darren, October 2010
Ignition off, disconnect battery (negative end is safer I found), ignition on, reconnect battery worked for me. Thanks. Out of the blue it did this which kinda freaked me. Thanks!

Scott, September 2010
disconnect the battery and then reconect it. which resets the coding for the central locking hope this helps.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Woohoo it works like a treat. To be honest, didn't think it would but it did. Have changed the batteries so many times and the light was coming on but no action. It seems to have reset itself. Even better the garage didn't get £50 for the pleasure of it. Thanks again.

i have just brough a clio 1998 but its got no service history so i literally know nothing about the car.
its come with two keys one of which has a button , does this mean it has central locking cuase if it does its clearly not working. any thoughts on this?
and if its not central locking what else could the button be for?
(as you can tell i have no idea about cars and this is my first so any help would be great, thanks)

Hi, im havin same problem... U need 2 re set key, i went 2 renault dealer 2day and they charge just under 50 quid 4 this, or if it the key, u can call out a mobile key cutters & they charge £125 for new key and re set.. But b4 u do any of this, try this first as most clio's can be re set in this way... get in car and lock and hold down central lockin button for afew sec ( until the car re unlocks) when this happens release button and wait for click noise (it should now work) when u push ya key fob, does a red light flash on fob? let me no good luck

Time has passed by since this advice was put on the net - Feb 2010 now and thanks Nicole as my old Clio played up and your instructions worked a treat, I'd been struggling manually locking it, trawled the net and found this - a gem tks

Tim, February 2010
i have just had the same problem with my 98 clio , finally pin pointed the problem , the sensor for your key which is next to your interior light , apparantly clio,s are prone for this problem , the arial is situated straight above your interior light and after time water leeks through and effect your sensor ,with mine i removed the sensor which was an easy 2 min job then l put a towel on the radiator and left the sensor on there overnight , fitted it bk in the next morning and it was as good as new . i hope it works for you !

my key to my renault dynamique 2002 is not working i have tried new battery in the key and still does not work. the key is not lighting up and wot lock or unlock my car wat can i do .

terri cooney, October 2009
further to earlier answers, my central locking would not work after a garage mot'd the car. Neither would the radio. The garage unhelpfully denied any of it was there doing so I trawled the web for advice. This worked for me.
Ignition 'off', disconnect the battery +ve lead - should be easy thumbscrew connection. Ignition 'on' two clicks, reconnect the battery carefully. Switch off, close door and try unlock/lock with key fob control. The garage is R A Autos KY11 9JN in case anybody wants to avoid the same hastle!

Tried doing that does not work?
any other tips you can give me?

Shaz, April 2008
Thanks Nicole, will have a go and see if it works or not.

Shaz, April 2008
Hi there. You might aswel try this.

Inside your car turn off the ignition and press and hold the central locking switch in the car itself (don't let go yet). You should hear the doors double lock. Then the light on the dashboard should stop flashing and stay on fully. Whilst STILL (!) pressing the central locking switch press the key fob/blip. Then you can let go of the central locking switch. Try checking it then and see how you get on.
