I have a vauxhall vectra 1996, 1.8 petrol. The engine light came on so I had the diagnostics check! its the camshaft and crank sensor. I would drive along and the car felt like it was misfirering and pulling back! then the light would come on and it would cut out completely - this whole job would of cost me £165 but I am going to buy the parts myself and get my car buddy to fit them , with the help of this site should save myself at least £70 And im a GIRL!!! not all lip sticks and hair spray eh! xx

Hi mate,
The problem is the air idle valve!!
Remove and squirt with carb cleaner and it cures the problem.

Hi,

I have just had a similar problem; it was also very sluggish at low revs in first and second gear. The orange engine light eventually came on and stayed on, I took it for a diagnostics check and they told me it was the cam sensor. To replace the sensor and the diagnostics check it was £120; the test on it's own was £30.

That was 4 days ago, today my timing belt has just gone and I have been quoted at least £200 as long as the valves etc have done no further damage to the engine.

Seven days ago I was going to trade my Vectra in for a Ford Focus!

As soon as it's fixed I will be waving goodbye to it.

Good luck with yours, I hope you don't experience similar problems.

Could be a problem with the Oil breather pipes being choked with oil. Look for the 10mm diameter pipes at the back of the crank head case. Another comon problem.
