i have a 14 hp murray riding mower that i had anew coil put on in Sept. 07?

now when you turn the switch it only clicks i have a new heavy battery could it be the starter how can i know

The click that you can hear Jim is the starter solenoid working - or at least trying to.....this is the heavy duty electrically operated switch that connects the battery directly to the starter motor. It sounds like your battery is flat, or nearly so as it has enough power to operate the solenoid but not the starter motor. Make sure its fully charged, and to test the solenoid, when you try the ignition switch you should get a 12v supply at the starter motor itself - easy enough to check using a voltmeter. Also check that all battery terminals are tight and clean.
