If you run out of oil you really need to bleed the system as far as the pump itself - undo the flexible oil pipe connection and drain off a litre or so of oil so it is completely air free. Once the boiler starts there is usually a bleed off valve on the pump, which should be opened a fraction just to get rid of any remaining air.
