how can i fix my clutch ford escort 1.6 16v 1997?

the biting point is very high i get about a inch of clutch (if you no what i mean) is there an adjustment i can make(novice) or is it time for a new clutch??????
mr done bad too, July 2005
Adjustment is by a screw in the clutch pedal. You can see it from the front, its an allen screw type. Sounds more like the clutch is very tired tho.
