James,

sounds like a simlar problem on your car, if you can smell fuel out the back then the catalytic converter is stuffed as a result, unburnt fuel will damage them. The bolt you speak of may have restricted the amount of air reaching the cylinder, however if your air inlet manifold gasket is blown like mine was (juding from the symptoms it sure sounds like it) then it will continue to cause the effects as I have described in my first post.

I have a 1996 Lantra 1.8L 5spd manual Sports Wagon. For the last few months I had the same problem,

start engine...High Idle, then surging, 1200-1800 rpm, higher if the AC was on.

I took it into my local Hyundai dealer and they found that the air inlet manifold gasket had blown and was sucking in additional air causing all the problems. Creating a lean mixture then the O2 sensor would register too much and cause more fuel to be used. All up 1 problem causing two issues!

Only $325 (Aus Dollars) to fix and now it is perfect!

It is an easy fix book you car in and tell them about it!

Well i am in the same boat as you when u start the engine it starts at 2,500 rpm then a few mins later it stutters around 1500 to 2000 rpm. and runs fine on a cruise, but moand and surges in 2nd or 3rd gear. I myself have put a bolt in the ECFI air output. The fixes the problem but the smoke out the back of the exhaust if black and stinks like fuel but as soon as I put it back all back to the stuttering hope someone can advise, I noticed the idle speed aculater was corroded and have yet to replace.
