how can I replace my belt on a Craftsmen Riding Lawnmower model number 28M7?

Replace a part on the mower deck and now we can not remember how the belt goes back on for the mower does not engage or disengage right. We might not have put the deck back on right either for my son took it off and can not remember how it goes back together. the model number is 28M707 on a Briggs and Straton 13 Horse Engine and it is a 42 inch cut.

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a suggestion- use a digital camera next time. Anytime I rip apart anything mechanical nowadays, I take a good half dozen snaps from various angles with my camera. Then I take the camera with me to Home Depot/parts stores.

You may want to try Sears' website and find the exploded diagram under the Parts section. I tried plugging your model number into the site, but it couldn't be found. See if you have a different model number somewhere. For instance, mine is 917.270913, yours may look something like that. Sometimes it is hard to translate an exploded parts diagram into what you see in your garage with a flashlight though.

Actually I am about to embark on changing both belts on my Craftsman. I had to replace the mower clutch cable since the attachment to the handle snapped. Unfortunately the deck still doesn't activate when I flip up the lever. I think the belt may be old/loose.

I Just put a drive belt on my c-man mower. It is probably a little different from yours but see if this tid bit helps. Stand the mower up on its rear end. Look on the under side of the place where your left foot usually sits as you drive the mower. On old cars it is called the running board. Anyway, that is where I found the belt diagram for the drive belt on my mower. I hope this works
