Great advice.

The only thing not mentioned is you will need a torx screwdriver.

Just changed switch on 2005 Picasso 4 pin switch .
took about 20 mins . remove grey plastic ,bit of carpet type trim below fuse box cover , black plastic on steering columm . all have star type screws . twist switch out , remove wiring plug and refit in reverse order . Quite a simple job bit fiddly but take your time and all will be good

Just used this information below and I think it has fixed a problem that I thought was going to cost me a fortune!

My car would apply the brakes as I was travelling along at 60mph slowing the car to 40mph before taking off again! Brake lights where permanantly on whilst the vehicle was driving slowly or stationary. This seems to have solved both problems!

Many Thanks

I have literally just finished changing the brake light switch on the above instructions, it took me approx 10 mins and saved me the £50 quote that I had from a local garage!

Hi, I have just bought a Picasso and the battery was flat as it had been stood for a while. Everytime I tried to jump it and ran it for 20 miles or so it would not restart?

Brake lights permanently on. Did exactley the same as you all. Brake lights now off! I had to take the cowling for the steering column off which required a long stemed torque ended driver. But apart from that it was a 20 min job. Thanks for the post, it really helped me.

Just fixed my brake light switch...

remove soft panel as described above, also take out fuse cover/coin cubby hole as this will give you extra light. Disconnect terminals by pulling firmly.
Remove switch - on my 2001 Piccaso HDI, it was on fine thread, which meant it took quite a few turns to remove - but as it is not a tight fitting this was easy.

As I could not buy a new switch on a Sunday, I had a go at fixing existing one. There's nothing complex about these switches, so I guessed that there was a problem with the internal connection - this worked for me.

Depress the button at end of switch -keep it pressed, hold upright and squirt WD40 into it. Release and push the button quickly a few times. Get some kitchen paper and wrap it round switch, then turn it button downwards, push it in and out again and tap it on its side to drain out WD40 - when I did this a black residue came out. Dry off the switch.

To test, pull the switch connector lead through open fuse cover and reconnect - turn the ignition on. Switch is now in open position, so brake lights will be permanently on if switch is now ok.

Mine worked again at this point. I got someone to check the lights whle I depressed and released the switch to make sure it was ok before I reconnected.

When putting switch back in hole above brake pedal, don't screw in, just push firmly.

This is a simple job, and despite my cumbersome explanation, takes about 15 mins to do in total. Saves a few quid if you're lucky as well.

I had a similar problem. Followed Tam's advice above, but ended up that I had a faulty brake light switch. DO NOT go to a dealer to get this, that will cost you about £16 plus fitting, go to your local parts dealer - I got one for £4.99 and fitted it myself.

mate i had this problem only the other day and fixed it, dont worry it's very easy to sort*phew* you can wipe sweat away from forehead......lets go
ok at drivers footwell there is a panel that comes off, it has 3 snap on snap off studs ( remove plastic panel)this gives you access to BRAKE SWITCH which sits higher up the brake pedal, its about 2" long and has a little plug going into it. remove plug then take out switch. the surclip is probably missing which holds the switch firmly in place, i put a couple of rotations of insulating tape on and pushed it back into place and put the plug back in.Problem solved(a citroen mechanic told me this is the best method to permanently fix this problem) it is a common fault so your not alone.. this will fix it.
