Renault Kangoo Van 1.5 DCi - Engine cuts out whilst driving?

Renault Kangoo Van 2003 1.5 DCI
I originally had a starting problem. The glow plug light would not come on and I could not start the engine. RAC called out and they diagnosed the Glow Plug Relay. This was replaced and since have had no problem starting the engine. However, since this, the engine has decided to cut out whilst still driving. It's intermittent and there's no real symptoms of when it's going to happen. Obviously popping it into a garage is a waste of time as it's unlikely they will find anything with it being intermittent. I had accidently pressed the red fuel shut off microswitch on the NS suspension turrent whilst I replaced the glow plug relay. Would this cause me a problem? Once the engine has cut out the ingnition lights come on. Once I stop I'm easily able to start the engine again with no problems. I use the van for my business so quite worried. Your help is much appreciated.

Just had the same fault on a 1.5dci Clio. Fault traced to the hand primer pump on the driver wing. Rubber had perished and has tiny split, drawing air into the fuel injectors. Air can be seen travelling through clear fuel pipe when throttle blipped between 1500 and 2000 revs. Easy fix

Hopefully this won't be a problem for me but I have got an oil leak! But I have also noticed while driving that my speedo drops to 0mph when I'm driving and then magically starts working again! Anybody had this problem?

Scott from Belfast, March 2013
have got that problem myself but the dash display goes mental and no reading on it then resets itself???

Craig did you ever get your Kangoo fixed. Mine has the same intermittent problem. It's driving me crazy

Mark, February 2012
i got the same intermittent problem with my Kangoo as Craig.
Did you ever bet it fixed?

Mark, February 2012
I had intermittent problems with my Kangoo which I thought was crap in the fuel lines, RAC/engine computer said it was the water temperature sensor, RAC guy and I jiggled a few wires, fixed it. Sensors can be more trouble than they are worth!

renault kangoos are a big pile of s got all sorts of problems with ours. its just falling to bits and going wrong monthly. i would never recomend one

SURELY YOUR REFERING TO THE CAM SENSOR ?
THATS THE ONEJUST UNDER AND FORWARD OF THE TOP ENGINE MOUNT. IT HAS A 10MM BOLT HOLDING IT ON AND IS A 5 MINUTE JOB TO CLEAN. SO FAR AS I'M AWARE THER'S NO CRANK SENSOR ON THE 1.5 DCI

I Had Injectors ckecked and they are all ok.

Could it be a valve or damaged piston rings or Cylinder head gasket?
Engine still running on 3 cylinders. There is also oil coming from some where and light blue smoke from exhaust.

One Cylinder down on my Kangoo 1.5 DCI. 74,000 miles on clock, 2003 model.

Do I have a major problem here ?

Alex, July 2008
also i should add that with common rail injection systems rely on pump pressure if you have a stuck injector the injector wont open unless you have a pressure above 250 bar so in turn you lose pressure from the rail which will make the engine stop, hope this help's

chris h, July 2008
common fault injector sticking, leak off test will show problem injector, standard code reader will show faulty injector.Reason that the engine will start when you switch off is because injection system will re-set it's self.

chris h, July 2008
just clean it.it will work

yep, the crank sensor wiring sleeving is naff and the 2 wires are probably touching , it causes knocking n all sorts of problems and eventually the cutting out , like you can tick over but as soon as you accelerate it cuts out

best bet is to follow the crank sensor wires into the wiring loom , check the sleeving is still entact ,

its a fiddly job and might be more suited to a auto electrician , who can splice and re-insulate the wires

Same thing kept happening on my kangoo, garage couldnt find a problem with it. The AA came out and cleaned the 'crank sensor' took him only a few mins. the van has had no problems for 2k miles, hope this helps.
