Nissan Terrrano crunches in reverse?

My Nissan Terrano,96 2.7 diesel 92k full history crunches when selecting reverse gear but 3 times out of ten it will go in fine.Any ideas?

possibly clutch not clearing fully,if you put it in a forward gear first it may engage smoothly,[forward gears are syncrho but reverse isnt].if it does then clutch plate could be sticking on gearbox input shaft splines. sometimes if you wait a few moments before selecting reverse you may find it goes in smoothly.
