Arison Margherita 2000 Machine started to make a very loud noise, would not drain, when turned on again, the dial at the fron goes round and round. from other replied sounds like it could be the water pump. There has also been a stale water smell coming from the machine for a few weeks. The service centre are saying it will cost £100 (or 150 for a years cover). Any advice appreciated.

Take out the pump filter. you have to remove the plastic panel at the bottom of the machine, it just prises off. The pump filter can be undone by hand - round knob at right hand side. If there is nothing in the pump filter it may be in one of the pipes that connects to the pump. The spring clips are a pain but persistence is worth while. I have had the same problem 3 times and it is usually a coin or some other small object.

You either have a pump failure or something stuck in the pump like a sock. Dont pay manufacturers prices get a local washing machine engineer out, could be recommended from someone you know and whilst he is diagnosing the fault be there to see what the outcome is. If it is a sock pay him for his time £25 or if it as a pump £50 remember these guys have overheads but do not be ripped of for £100 without the pump fitted or time levied by the manufacturer.
