Nissan Primastar fuel not coming through from tank?

Just changed the diesel filter on my 1.9dCi engined Primastar (same as Renault Trafic / Vauxhall Vivaro). I ensured I filled the housing with diesel then went to hand-prime it to remove the air. But all I get from the fuel line from the tank is more air, no diesel! Tank is over quarter full ..... please, any ideas?????

gerard, there isn,t a one-way valve in the hand primer that you squeeze to bleed the system. The one-way valve is inside the "push on" fitting that connects to the filter housing. The slightest bit of debris (sucked up from the tank) that gets stuck in this non-return valve will cause it to malfunction. ie. when you attempt to prime/bleed the fuel system by squeezing the rubber bulb, fuel will just flow to and fro inside the fuel pipe, not just travel in one direction as intended by the one way valve. If you change the fuel filter make sure that you fill the filter bowl completely with fuel before fitting it back to its mounting and reconnecting the fuel pipes. Hope these tips have helped you.

Cheers for that Mark - I've actually sorted it now. I presume there's a non-return valve in the hand pump but this must have been stuck open. For future reference, by removing the inlet pipe from the filter housing, sticking a pencil rubber in the end & after tapping the hand pump a little we managed to get the fuel to pump up through! Once again, thanks for your reply!

place a pipe on the fuel filter bleed screw on the top side of the filter and then try to bleed the fuel through that way, and then if you are getting a flow of fuel coming out of the pipe going into a container, just close the screw and keep squeezing until it get hard then the system should be primed,.
