Nissan Primera P12, 2004: error code i display and no access to radio/cd?

The dashboard screen is displaying the word "SECURE" on a green backround, and I cant access neither the radio nor the cd player.

The authorized dealer says it's caused by a radio-failure and the only solution is to replace the Clarion factory-radio, which would cost 1700 euro (approx 2400 USD). No kiddin! They tried to recode my keys, but unfortunately that didn't help.

It seems that there is no chance to replace the radio with any other unit as it's close code-connected to the IMMU/NATS.

Due to the workshop manual the green bar with the word "secure" suggests that repair requires either change of the powerunit to the audiosystem - or the radio. In my case the power works, so they concludes that the radio is defect. THe authorized dealer doesn't dig deeper into the problem. Myself I assume that its just a communication error, that has to be fixed - but how?

Each time the radio is switched on, the radio will start up communication with the vehicle’s immobilizer control unit (IMMU) and verify an identification code. If communication cannot be established, or the verified code is incorrect, the radio will lock up showing ‘‘SECURE’’ on the radio display.

I am not prepared to pay all that money for a new radio. So please let me know of any other solution!

Had the same problem. Nissan Primera 2004. I considered disconnecting the battery but figured removing the audio fuse and replacing it might work. It did!

had the same problem disconnected the earth terminal lead for 2 mins put back on & hey presto my radio was back on...... only to find that in the morning it was secure again ...?

Hi all,
I just bought a Nissan Primera 2004 model and for some reasons the radio stopped working and brings the "secure" code. The radio didn't work but other functions are fine
I read on many solutions here but the one I tried was the one posted by LittleDan above.
I removed the negative lead terminal of the battery for about 50 minutes, connected it back and everything was fine. Radio back and CD working.
Try it guys. Ignore NISSAN.
Thank you all, especially LittleDan.

Hey I've had this problem on and off for years have a 2004 primera. Took to dealer and they said 1800 replace the computer. This was 4 years from new in 2008 refused to accept it was a general fault issue. I declined approx 6 months later I got a flat battery needed a jump and radio came back. so when it happens I disconnect the battery leave it for 30 mins and it seems to reset. Pain in the rear doh...

garage replaced my cd player but could not recode it as the secure light black on orange background came on now ive no radio or cd can some one help

My radio works most of the time, but sometimes it doesn't work at all, other times the secure is displayed and the radio doesn't work. If I'm driving, I depress the clutch, turn the ignition off, change into third gear, turn the ignition back on and then bump start the engine, and hey presto the secure has gone and the radio is back on!

You need to take the fuse for the audio unit (AFAIK, it's the 9th fuse).

Wait 5 minutes, re-connect the fuse - enjoy!

have the same problem and the dealer said it effects the heating and air con.I have no heating at the moment.so i am forced to buy a new radio...

tom canes, May 2010
I had the same problem. Don't listen to Nissan(they will tell you that you need a new stereo unit)
The reason for the secure messane is because the radio has lost the code between its self and the cars ecu. As the radio is linked to the ecu it will only work in the car it is origionly fitted in, it will not even fit in another car of the same make and model, so all you have to do is disconnect the battery negative lead for about 20-30 minutes, this will cause the cars ecu to reset. When you reconect the battery lead and switch on your ignition, you shoud have your audio back on. This has happened twice on my car and the ecu reset has worked both times.
I hope this information helps you.
thank you
