Where is the speed sensor located in a renault clio 1999?

My renault clio 1.2 1999 petrol has a faulty speed sensor. I have the part but do not know where the sensor is located on the car. It's not on the gear box as I originally thought. Can any one help?

Hi, how do you know it is a faulty speed sensor? I a have engine idle speed / auto choke problem, has anyone experienced the same?

It is right on the back of the gearbox. It is a 10 - 15 cm long black device with a plug and wire attched to the top of it. It is reasonably hard to get to. I gained access to mine from underneath the car.

Thanks to you both - found the sensor on the back of the gearbox - it was easy to remove, and new one fitted - no problems.

Hi, as far as my research goes upto 1998 there was a speed sensor on the gearbox but from 99 onwards in the new digital age they use the speed sensors for the ABS and the ABS ECU talks to the engine ECU and takes an average of the wheel speed sensors to give the speedo output

where are you looking on the gearbox ,if it has one on the gearbox it is round the back part of the gearbox behind the engine you will see a wiring loom going to the sensor , but if its not there its possable the abs computer is providng the speed signal for the vehicle and if that is the case you will need to diagnose the abs computer and check the parameters so you can determin the cause of the fault, ie is it a computer fault , wheel speed sensor fault on the front , ring gear on driveshaft broken , wiring fault, instrument panel fault , all these things need to be checked to find the fault , happy dianostics , . Or you just might not have seen the sensor on the gearbox , then all you have to do is fit the new sensor , but check the connector make sure its in good condition , hope that helps .
