What is wrong with my 1997 Renault Megane Scenic?

I have a 1997 P Reg Renault Megane Scenic 1.6e RT. It suddenly started pinking whilst driving and had delayed accelaration and loss of power. When sitting on idle, the car is only running on what feels like 2 cylinders (not the spark plugs or ht leads) and the engine knocks. The engine appears to have a good compression rate and the fuel pump is working however the car smells as if it is running weak.
If you have any suggestions or ideas, all would be appreciated.

Try the vacuum pipe at the rear of the engine. It may be leaking.

The ignition packs seem to regularly go on Scenics - it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case here - they advise changing them in pairs I believe. They come as 1+3 or 2+4 - I guess if you can confirm that the problem is with one pair this would inidicate these have gone. I imagine you could confirm it by a) removing the leads of one pair - if no worse you have remove dthe leads from the bad pair - if the engine packs up - you have removed them from the good pair. To save paying for a new pair in case its not the issue, swap them over and do it again.
