Hotpoint WD71 Washer/Dryer ultima 1200 'chewing' up clothes - Why ?

Has anyone had trouble with this happening during Washing (I don't use the Dryer at all)?
Have tried putting fewer clothes in machine, but t-shirts, sheets, cotton stuff etc still get little nicks/holes in them altho not during every wash.
Last straw was yesterday when a pair of trousers was completely ripped across at the knee - is this model known for these problems ? Is it an engineer job ?

Same here. 1 in 15 - 20 washes will rip a garment. Most often a tee shirt that you really like!

While I'm glad it's not just my machine, is there an answer to this? Does Hotpoint read these forums?

i have had items torn during washing and drying. Only now and then not in every wash.

I've had the same problem with mine. I was told that it's common with lots of washer-dryers, and is caused by clothes getting caught on the air vent which you can feel just above the inside of the door. Cost us a fair few clothes.
