It may be the brushes in the motor.
If the machine is a few years old this may be the cause - I had exactly that problem in my Hoover machine this week.
Although your machine may be different, I removed the motor, and replaced the brushes at a cost of £7.
The motor was replaced and all was well - if you are doing this make sure that the power is off before beginning.
