My Craftsman Mod. 917.271831 dies when i let the clutch out?

When I try to let the clutch out or engage the blades, the engine dies. As long as the safety switch is being pressed down by the handle for the blades and the clutch is in it runs fine, but if I try to release either one, the engine dies. Is the safety switch the problem and are there more than one safety switches? the manual shows 2 plus the seat switch, i only see the 1 under the blade lever and the seat switch.

This sounds like a seat switch. It's OK for the engine to run if you're not in the seat, but there are NO ciscumstances where you would want the blades engaged when you're out of the seat. If the seat switch is dead, this will cause your problem.
