how do you know if your brake pedal switch is faulty?

the brake lights on my escort estate have stopped working. I have checked the fuse box and the blubs ...all are ok. I think it may be the brake pedal switch..... I now am struggling as I don't really know how to check if this is working...anybody got the knowledge that they could pass onto me.
Thanks

brake switch is located above pedal you can pull wires off and join with paper clip to make circuit put ign on brake lights should work switch is adjustable also plunger can stick cheap and easy to replace
