Heating keeps going off?

My central heating & hot water are not coming on if I turn them on at the wall or on the set timer. However, if I press the reset switch,it comes on for about 20 minutes then goes off again.. I have turned the thermostat up to the highest tempreture but still going off.. It's a potterton boiler.

if your rads got hot?? then i would say problem is definately power related. either motorised valve playing up for heating working now and then(good possibility) or maybe iffy programmer. if i was there with a multi meter i could tell you in no time where power was going and where it wasnt. motorised valve head about £30

Thanks for your help fella,
I left them both on timed to come on this morning & the water came on but the heating didn't. I turned the heating from timed to manual & it fired up straight away & stopped on until it hit the tempreture on the thermostat. The boiler is making a little more noise than usual as you can hear a water gurgling sound...

it looks like im talking to myself dont it, people will think ive finally flipped. :-)

my second guess would be if you demand ch by itself the boiler will not fire up at all?

if so, replace the motorised head

if you have problems like this, we need to try all situations to try find a weak point or a similarity. whats not happening in all sometimes is not enough, we need to try see what will work first.

do you have a tank of hot water? could it just be topping up heat thats why its not firing for long?

do you think ch could be the problem side?

my guess sitting here is hard because i dont really know what you have. i would guess potterton suprima, ep2002 programmer, s plan system.

if it was the above i would fire hw only, go into cylinder cupboard and find hw valve and see if it is hot on pipework either side and repeat for ch valve.

if you have a valve that is hot one side and warm on tother when it should be open could just be motorised valve fault not opening valve and letting boiler work on bypass only which is why it cuts out frequently, its kind of a short circuit.

any valves buzzing in there?

I have turned the heating off & have just left hot water on & the tank is getting warm & we have hot water. It sounds like the boiler keeps trying to fire up but then goes off after about 30 seconds.

if you select hot water only will it fire up and be on/off but eventually heat the tank?

does it lock out or satisfy?
