older model maybe 20 years old canister type has very little suction even with the hose off.what does it need?model #1453 with a power nozzle.

The motor armature is likely shorted and dragging down the motor, causing low speed and bad performance. An obvious sign of this condition would a motor sounding like it's running slow and arcing and flashing visible through the blower door.
