How can I fix my dryer?

I have an electric whirlpool dryer. I'm not sure how old it is. It will start to dry my clothes but then halfway through it will just stop working and it will smell strongly of smoke. After that it will stay non working for a few hours then I am able to try it again but it just does the same thing over. Its almost as if its over heating. How can I fix this problem or should I just junk it and buy a new dryer?

unplug it! pull off the the exsoste vent and see if it clogged up. if the vent is clog up it will over heat and turn off automaticly. Get all the lint out of there and if you are up to it unscrew the back panel and vacuum it out get all the lint out of it, put it back to gather. plug back in .
