3 possible reasons - 1) The thermostat is faulty and cooling water can't circulate around the engine 2) The cylinder head gasket has gone....any signs of oil in the coolant? 3) Maybe the radiator is blocked with sludge. A fourth but much less likely reason is that the water pump has failed - sometimes the impeller on the back falls off.
