How can I fix my Carlton Tumble Dryer 3101?

There is very little heat coming from the dryer and it takes 3 times as long to dry clothing.

Everything else works.

Ours is the Carlton 3100 model. I've just managed to fix it by cleaning the vent to the outside of the house. We've always kept the lint filter clean - the one that slides in and out of the machine, in a slot between the drum and the door. What I hadn't realised until I tried cleaning it was that lint also builds up against a wire mesh fitted inside the plastic cover on the outside of the house - the other end of the flexible ventilation pipe. I think what happened to us was that the vent was blocked, the dryer couldn't get rid of the warm air fast enough, and the thermostat did what it's there for, turning the heat off to prevent a fire. Oh, and the sticky label underneath the dryer says it was made in 1988.

Mine did the same. First unplug the dryer from the wall, check the thermostat by making a short piece of wire with a male spade connector at each end. Turn the dryer upside down, remove the four screws holding the bottom cover on. you will see the thermostat (a small black thingy with a couple of connectors on it held in with 2 self tapping screws located in the air vent tunnel) disconnect it and plug in your short piece of wire in stead of the thermostat try the dryer you will get heat if the themostat is faulty if no heat it is most likely the heater element under no circumstances run the dyer for more than a few seconds a thermostat is a safety device and must be used
