Help - How do I fix my VW GTI trip computer?

VW Golf 2 GTi 16v (1989) - The MPG on the trip computer now only shows 99.9 (it used to work). All other functions seem OK. Can it be fixed (is there a sensor somewhere)? I have tried re-setting by dissconecting the battery to no avail.

sounds like the computer itself has died but the reverse light switch believe it or not controls alot of functions on the computer.worth a try
