nissan primera 1,8ltr 1995?

a dash board alarm goes on when i start the car and does not go off. it looks like a tube with some steam coming on top of the tube. what is the alarm for.

the symbol on the dash is a temp warning due to the vehicle having ran out of water in the cooling system.probably has an audio warning too.
