99 saab 9-3.... speedometer is stuck on the same number?

have a saab9-3 speedometer reading shows but it is not moving,as i drive it does not tell me how fast i am going.... i called couple of places and one person told me it is my speed sensor and the anti-lock brake system is what gives the information to the speed guage. this vehicle has five different speed sensors. my abs light and brake light is on on my cluster.... i dont want to start buying parts and replace them without understanding the problem.... if somebody has any knowledge about this, i would really appreciate if you could assist me . thanks....

Hi.
I've disconnected the battery and the result was immediate. I think these errors happened after long trips, that fully recharge the battery, and than for any reason I have to turn the engine on again just a few minutes after. Maybe it is something with the battery. I will verfify that on the next maintenance.
good luck

Hi there I have a 2005 1.9 Tid 9-3. I'm having trouble with my speedo. When the car is parked up with the keys out of the ignition it's sat on about 15 mph. When I drive off it reads approx 15 more than the speed I'm going. Last week I had trouble with my Egr solenoid I repair this and the car was running fine for a week, could it be connected? There are no engine management lights on and I have disconnected the battery for 15 minutes but still the same. I have heard it could be connected to the Abs module! Any help would be appreciated , this happened after my wife drove down a bit of a dirt track today.

Hi ! I also have a 2005 saab 9-3. My speedometer first had an error of 10km (even when stopped) and lately increased next to 20km/H. I see that there has been people with this problem also. The guys at saab done some resets and everything was fine for 1 month, but this happened again and the saab dealer is very far. Help please ?

Solved it! It was indeed the ABS sensor module. I removed and mailed it to BBA-Reman (http://www.bba-reman.com/). They repaired it and sent it back ($150 or so). I put it back in and now all works fine! The ABS and the Brake light signs are gone. The speedometer is working. The "Check Engine" sign that came on is also gone. If you notice carefully you may/may not notice that the odometer also stops. That is rectified as well. With odometer malfunction, the computer also does not estimate the mpg and avg speed. That fixed as well. I believe the dealer would have charged me around $1500-$2000. It is somewhat messy to take the sensor module out and put it back in. But it can be done with some patience and some standard set of tools. I am not a pro at these type of fixes but did it just fine. I will see if I can post some photos to help in the process.

I have a 2001 9-3 and it just started doing the same thing. No speed, all warning lights on and it acts like it wants to stall when stopped at a red light. I am going to start changning sensors one at a time next weekend end, I'll post if/when i get to the solution.

That is really really odd. My wife just called me - speedometer is dead, brake light is on, abs light is on! Same make - Saab 9-3. Same year - 99. Please let me know what you found out. Design to Fail in June 2008?

Ray, June 2008
Hi Belay, the only certain way to find out is to have the car connected to a diagnotic code reader and it will pinpoint which sensor has failed and as the ABS light is on there is oviously a fault in that system, that could well be one or more of the sensors.
